French Residence Permit: Prolongation of Status

Friends, we’re often asked—can you return to us for status changes or renewals? Can we help? Absolutely! About 80% of our clients come back to us for additional assistance—obtaining permanent residency after a temporary residence permit, acquiring new citizenship, purchasing property, renewing status, exchanging a driver’s license, and more. We’re always happy to help our clients. When you work with us, you can expect faster processing since part of your initial information is already securely stored in our databases and archives.

A few months ago, a client, Yulia, reached out to us again. A year prior, our lawyers helped her obtain a temporary residence permit (Titre de séjour) in France. At that time, we were also working with her close acquaintance, Ilya, who was receiving the same status. Alongside assisting Yulia in obtaining the new status, we helped her rent a property in the suburbs of Paris, open a French bank account, and address other related matters.

This time, Yulia requested our assistance in renewing her residence permit. French law allows for the renewal of a residence permit up to five times.

How to Renew a Residence Permit in France

  1. Contact the Prefecture at your place of residence.
  2. Submit renewal documents 60 days before the residence permit expires.
  3. Prepare and submit documents similar to those initially filed for the residence permit.
  4. Wait for notification of the decision by mail.

Yulia contacted us in advance to assist with this process as well. Currently, applications for renewal can be submitted online via the Personal Account portal, which significantly saves time. Yulia had not violated any local laws and fully met the requirements for renewing her residence permit.

Two weeks after submitting the documents, we received a positive decision regarding her permit renewal. Unfortunately, there was a delay in the notification of the new residence permit card’s readiness, and Yulia had to wait a little longer. But without losing time, we engaged our French lawyer and arranged an appointment for Yulia to collect the card. The new card was quickly received—essential not only for staying in France (and the EU, accordingly) but also for updating her European bank accounts.
