You live in Slovenia and keep working for your foreign employer or clients. No separate work permit and no labour-market test: the status was created exactly for this.
No property purchase, no company to set up, no contribution. One requirement: proven income from remote work abroad above the threshold.
Most Slovenian residence permits allow family reunification only after a year of residence. Digital nomads are a statutory exception: spouse, children and dependent parents apply at once.
With a Slovenian residence permit you enter other Schengen countries without a visa and stay there for up to 90 days in any 180 days.
The first year carries no special requirements: no language exam, no integration courses. It is time to decide whether Slovenia becomes home.
Two routes afterwards: a 6-month pause and a new application, or a change of basis to self-employment or employment in Slovenia if you decide to stay. We prepare the second step in advance.

| Government fee and residence card | per tariff the amount under the Administrative Fees Act is confirmed on the filing date |
|---|---|
| Decision on the application | 30 days from receipt of a complete file; up to 60 days with a special verification (Article 91 ZTuj-2) |
| Permit term | up to 1 year for the term of the contract; for the self-employed one year or the planned stay if shorter |
| New application | after 6 months from the expiry of the previous permit; no extension |
| Passport | +3 months beyond the planned period of residence |
We check the type of employment, income over recent months, family composition, citizenship and where you are now. We decide where to file and whether the family files in parallel.
Contracts and employer details, income statements, business registration, insurance, police clearance with apostille, translations. For the family: marriage and birth certificates.
At a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consulate abroad. If you are lawfully in Slovenia, at the administrative unit (upravna enota) before your permitted stay expires; you receive a certificate that serves as a residence permit until the decision.
By law the authority decides no later than 30 days after receiving a complete file; with a special verification of refusal grounds, up to 60 days. We answer document requests at once so the term does not stretch.
You receive a residence card marked 'digitalni nomad'. We register your address and arrange the family if they filed separately.
A few months before expiry we decide: a 6-month pause and a new application, or a switch to another basis. If you stay, we prepare the change of basis before the permit expires.
The official conditions are above. Below is how the programme works in real life, from our practice.
Digital nomad visas follow one logic: the state wants money to arrive in the country and be spent there. So the status is issued without excessive demands, while tax residency is decided separately, under tax law rather than by permit type. We check this before the move.
The Slovenian permit has its own correct scenario: a first year without special requirements, time to understand calmly whether the country suits you. There are no exams or integration conditions at this stage.
The first route is a six-month pause and a fresh application. The second is to register as self-employed in Slovenia and move to clear, minimal taxes while continuing to live in the country. The choice depends on whether Slovenia has become home: for some it is a temporary base, for others the start of a move.
Permanent residence requires five years of continuous legal residence and basic Slovene (A2). The mandatory six-month pause between digital nomad permits breaks continuity, so the route to permanent residence runs through a change of basis without a gap. We show how the periods add up.
Digital nomad visas follow a common logic: the state wants money to come into the country and be spent there, so the status is granted readily, but it does not automatically make a person a tax resident. Each such visa has its own correct use case. For the Slovenian one, in our practice, it looks like this: the first year has no special requirements, and it is time to get to know the country calmly.
Then comes a fork. The first route is to take a six-month pause and apply again. The second is to register as self-employed and move to clear, minimal taxes while continuing to live in Slovenia. The choice depends on whether the country has become home: for some it is a temporary base, for others the beginning of a full relocation.
If the family really lives in Slovenia, this opens a path to permanent residence and, in time, to citizenship, under the general rules, with requirements for the time spent in the country.

Who this programme suits in our practice.
You work under an employment contract for a company registered outside Slovenia and perform the work remotely. You need the contract, confirmation of the remote arrangement and the employer's details: name, address, registration or tax number.
You work under civil-law contracts with foreign clients. You prove the contracts and the inflows; there must be no Slovenian clients.
You are registered as self-employed or as an entrepreneur in your own country and run the business remotely. You prove the registration and the income from it.
Developers, designers, marketers, analysts from India, the UAE or anywhere else: any profile where the work is done entirely online. The first year has no integration requirements.

Request a quoteFor Garant IN the family is a core value: the Slovenian digital nomad permit extends to your loved ones without a waiting period under Article 47 of the Foreigners Act (ZTuj-2). Below are the rules as of October 2026 from the consolidated text of the Act, without generic phrases.
A spouse, a registered partner or a partner with whom you live in a long-term de facto union (the Act recognises it as family). A digital nomad is one of the express exceptions in Article 47: the family can be brought over immediately, without a year of residence and regardless of the term of your permit. The spouse needs no separate income: you prove the funds for them.
Minor unmarried children, yours and your spouse's or partner's. Adult unmarried children are included if, under the law of your country of citizenship, you are obliged to maintain them. Birth certificates with legalisation and translation are required; for a partner's child, the other parent's consent.
Parents of the applicant, spouse or partner, if under the law of the country of citizenship you are obliged to maintain them; the obligation is proven with documents. The Act sets no age threshold. In exceptional cases the authority may treat another relative as a family member if special circumstances favour reunification.
Your threshold of about EUR 3,391 a month does not change with family size: it is a requirement for the applicant. For each family member the Act requires funds not below the level for entitlement to cash social assistance. The base amount from 1 March 2026 is EUR 507.43; under the coefficients of the social benefits act a partner is EUR 289.24 (0.57) and a child EUR 299.38 (0.59) a month. A couple with two children: about 3,391 + 289.24 + 598.76 = around EUR 4,279 a month. Family documents: marriage and birth certificates with apostille and translation, police clearance for adults, insurance for everyone. Statements from Indian or UAE accounts are accepted with translation where needed.
The family files together with you or later, at the mission or at the administrative unit (upravna enota); a family member lawfully in Slovenia receives a certificate that serves as a residence permit until the decision. Garant IN's migration programme experts check every family member's documents in advance to rule out a refusal for an individual applicant. Verified on 6 October 2026 against ZTuj-2 (Articles 47, 51.a) and gov.si publications.
The conditions are the same for everyone. The difference lies in calculating the threshold on the filing date, assembling the file to 2026 requirements and deciding in advance what happens after the year.
The threshold is tied to the average salary that SURS publishes every month. We take the latest publication on the filing date and build in a margin so the application does not fail because the figure moved.
An employee, a freelancer and a business owner prove income differently: contract and employer details, a pool of client contracts, registration and payouts from your own company. We assemble the set for your type, with translations and legalisation.
If you are lawfully in Slovenia on a visa-free passport, on a visa or with a residence permit of another EU country, we file inside the country and obtain a certificate that serves as a residence permit until the decision. If not, we choose the mission with appointment availability and workload in mind.
We calculate funds for every family member under the statutory rule from the start and file for reunification without a waiting period: a specific privilege of digital nomads that most residence permits do not have.
The permit is not extendable. We decide early what happens after 12 months: a pause and a new application, or a switch to self-employment or employment in Slovenia, and prepare the documents for the chosen scenario.
Wording pending approval.
The temporary residence permit for a digital nomad is a new basis in the Slovenian Foreigners Act. It was introduced by amendment ZTuj-2I in spring 2025 and has applied since 21 November 2025. The idea is the same as for other nomad visas: a person earns outside the country, lives in it and spends money there, so the state grants the status without investment and without a labour-market test.
The programme suits three types of applicant. The first is an employee of a company outside Slovenia who works remotely. The second is a freelancer with foreign clients under civil-law contracts. The third is a self-employed person or the owner of a business registered abroad who runs it online. For professionals from India and the UAE this is one of the few European statuses with a statutory decision term of 30 days and family reunification from day one.
It does not suit those who plan to work for a Slovenian employer or take Slovenian clients, nor those who want to start accumulating years towards permanent residence straight away: the permit is issued for no longer than a year and is not extended. For the second case there is a change of basis after the first year, which we plan in advance.
The permit is not extendable. Six months after it expires you can apply again on the same terms, against the current income threshold. Between permits you may be in Slovenia visa-free or on a visa within the general Schengen rules.
If you decide to stay, before the permit expires we file for another basis: self-employment in Slovenia or employment with a Slovenian employer. The conditions of that basis are checked on the date of application; they are not part of the digital nomad status.
Article 52 of the Act: 5 years of continuous legal residence on temporary residence permits plus a Slovene exam at A2 level. Absences shorter than 6 consecutive months and no more than 10 months in total are allowed, so continuity holds only with a change of basis without a gap.
After permanent residence, naturalisation is possible under the Citizenship Act. Slovenia also has a route through business and a substantial contribution to the economy, but it is not transactional: the contribution is not measured by a sum, the decision rests with the state, and we do not promise the outcome.

Two levels of quality control: Garant IN's migration consulting and case management department runs a rigorous pre-application compliance screening (Pre-Due Diligence) and prepares the document package to 2026 requirements, while the application in Slovenia is prepared and filed together with licensed local lawyers and authorised agents. This is how we minimise the risk of refusal at the preparation stage, before the documents reach the government authority.
The main difference is the term. Slovenia issues the permit for no longer than 1 year and does not extend it: a new application is possible after 6 months. In return: a short statutory decision term (30 days), no integration requirements in the first year and family without waiting. It is a status to live and decide, not to accumulate years towards permanent residence directly.
At least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia as last published in the Official Gazette. Per SURS data for July 2026 the average net salary is EUR 1,695.34, so the threshold is about EUR 3,390.68 a month. The figure is updated every month, so we calculate it on the filing date and build in a margin.
No. The basis is designed for work for an employer or clients outside Slovenia: the status does not give access to the Slovenian labour market. If you want to work for a Slovenian company or start a business there, that is a different basis you can switch to after the first year.
The digital nomad status does not make you a tax resident by itself; residency is determined under Slovenian tax law, not by permit type. If you actually live in the country for most of the year, the question must be checked in advance. We do this before the move, not after.
At a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consulate abroad, including the mission serving India or the UAE. If you are lawfully in Slovenia, on a visa-free passport, on a C or D visa or with a residence permit of another EU country, you can file at the administrative unit (upravna enota) before your permitted stay expires. You then receive a certificate that serves as a residence permit until the decision.
The permit is not extendable. Two options: a 6-month pause and a new application on the same terms, or a switch to another basis before the permit expires, for example self-employment in Slovenia. We plan the second step early so you are not facing the choice a month before expiry.
Yes, time on a temporary residence permit counts towards the five-year period under Article 52 of the Act. But continuity is preserved only with absences shorter than 6 consecutive months and no more than 10 months in total. The mandatory six-month pause between two digital nomad permits breaks it, so the route to permanent residence runs through a change of basis without a gap.
Yes. Digital nomads are an express exception in Article 47: the family can be brought over without a year of residence and regardless of the permit term. Filing is possible at the mission or in Slovenia; a family member already lawfully in the country receives a certificate that serves as a residence permit until the decision.
You file at the Slovenian mission serving your country of residence, or in Slovenia if you are there lawfully. Police clearance is required from the country of citizenship; UAE documents are legalised through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indian documents with an apostille, and everything is translated. Income is assessed in euros: statements from your salary or business account for recent months are enough, with no transfer to Slovenia required for the application.
By law, 30 days from a complete file, up to 60 with a special verification. With document preparation and the mission appointment, a realistic term from first meeting to card is 1.5–3 months, depending on the workload of the specific mission. We do not promise 'two weeks'.
Yes. Article 47 of the Foreigners Act counts as family members the spouse or partner, minor children of the applicant and partner, and adult unmarried children and parents whom the applicant or partner is obliged to maintain under the law of their country of citizenship. The maintenance obligation is proven with documents. Digital nomads bring the family over immediately, without a year of residence.
The threshold of about EUR 3,391 a month applies to the applicant personally and does not grow with family size. Separately, funds for each family member must not be below the cash social assistance level: under the 2026 coefficients a partner is EUR 289.24 and a child EUR 299.38 a month. The main applicant shows the funds for the family.
Yes. If the application is refused through the fault of our team or an error in building the case, we refund the company's service fee less a minimal retention for costs actually incurred. Refund terms, the payment schedule and the rules on retaining service costs are fixed in the contract before work begins.
