Portugal Golden Visa through an investment fund: residence for EUR 500,000 without property

A Portuguese residence permit for EUR 500,000 in a regulated non-property investment fund — the main Golden Visa route since the 2023 reform. A 2-year card with renewals, 7 days in the country in the first year, spouse, children and parents in one file, the capital stays your asset on the fund's terms, and the Indian passport stays untouched.

Investment
EUR 500,000units of non-property collective investment undertakings set up under Portuguese law: maturity at the time of investment of at least 5 years, at least 60% of the investments in companies based in Portugal; the sum may be split across several funds
Family
no extra investmentspouse, children under 18, dependent students up to 25, dependent parents; AIMA fees per person
Timeline
no statutory term on the AIMA sitethe agency is clearing its ARI backlog under a dedicated plan; in our practice a renewal takes about 2.5 months, a first issuance longer. This is not a statutory term
  • The Golden Visa through a fund is the residence permit for investment activity (ARI, article 90-A of Lei 23/2007) based on a capital transfer of EUR 500,000 or more into units of non-property collective investment undertakings set up under Portuguese law.
  • The fund requirements are set in law: a maturity at the time of investment of at least 5 years and at least 60% of the investments in commercial companies based in Portugal. The investment may not go directly or indirectly into property. The sum may be split across several qualifying funds.
  • Minimum stay: 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent 2-year period. The card is issued for 2 years and renewed; the units must be held for at least 5 years or renewal is at risk (AIMA FAQ).
  • AIMA fees from 1 March 2026: EUR 842.80 to analyse the application, EUR 8,418.90 to issue the permit and EUR 4,210.30 per renewal — per applicant, family members included.
  • After 5 years of temporary residence: the right to apply for permanent residence; citizenship after 10 years of legal residence under the law of 18 May 2026, with a language and culture test. This is residence, so the Indian passport is untouched; only naturalisation would mean giving it up.

What you get

The capital stays an asset

Unlike a cultural contribution, fund units are your property: on the fund's terms the capital comes back with a gain or a loss. This is an investment with risk, not a payment to the state.

Professional management

The fund and its depositary operate under the supervision of CMVM, Portugal's securities regulator. The management company, not you, chooses the companies.

Residence without relocating

The law requires 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each following 2-year period. Tax residence does not arise from that automatically.

Family in one file

Spouse, minor children, dependent students up to 25 and dependent parents apply with you; one investment covers everyone. ARI holders are exempt from the 2-year wait before reunification (Lei 61/2025). As residence, it leaves every family member's Indian passport untouched.

Schengen without visas

With a Portuguese residence card you enter other Schengen countries and spend up to 90 days there in any 180-day period.

Years that count towards PR and citizenship

Time on the ARI card counts as legal residence: permanent residence after 5 years, the right to apply for citizenship after 10 years with knowledge of the language and culture.

Official requirements

Facts verified October 8, 2026

A nationality outside the EU
The programme is for third-country nationals only; Portuguese, EU, EEA, Andorran and Swiss citizens cannot use it. The law allows refusal to persons under EU restrictive measures (article 77 of Lei 23/2007).
EUR 500,000 in a qualifying fund
A capital transfer of at least EUR 500,000 to buy units of a non-property collective investment undertaking set up under Portuguese law. Fund maturity at the time of investment of 5 years or more, at least 60% of the investments in companies based in Portugal. Several funds are allowed if the total meets the threshold and the money arrived by international transfer.
Not into property
Article 3 of Lei 23/2007 prohibits directing the investment, directly or indirectly, into real estate. A fund with residential, commercial or hotel property in its strategy does not qualify, whatever it is called.
Proof of the investment
A declaration from a credit institution registered with the Bank of Portugal confirming the actual transfer; a certificate from the registrar that you hold the units free of encumbrances; a declaration from the management company on the viability of the capitalisation plan, a maturity of at least 5 years and 60% in Portuguese companies. The fund's depositary is as a rule a bank registered with CMVM as a financial intermediary.
A 5-year commitment
A declaration of honour to keep the investment at the required level for at least 5 years. Selling or changing the units before then can jeopardise renewal while the status depends on that investment (AIMA FAQ).
Documents for the applicant
Passport, proof of legal entry and stay in Portugal, health cover (the national health service or international insurance for the permit period), a criminal record certificate from the country of origin and any country of residence of more than a year — no older than 3 months, translated into Portuguese and certified — a tax number, certificates of no debt to the Portuguese tax and social security authorities (no older than 45 days), and the receipt for the analysis fee.
Minimum stay
7 days in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent 2-year period, consecutive or not.

How the process works

  1. Diagnosis and choice of fund1–2 days

We check nationality, source of funds, family composition and the goal. We give a shortlist of funds against the legal criteria and your risk profile, and compare it with the culture route.

  2. NIF, bank, transfer of capital2–6 weeks

We obtain the tax number, open an account with a Portuguese bank, pass its checks and send EUR 500,000 by international transfer. The time depends on the bank — practice, not a statutory term.

  3. Purchase of units and proofper the fund's rules

Subscription for units, the bank's transfer declaration, the registrar's certificate of unencumbered ownership, the management company's declaration (maturity of 5 years or more, 60% in Portuguese companies).

  4. Filing through the ARI portalwhen the dossier is ready

Mandatory online pre-registration, upload of documents, payment of the analysis fee by DUC. A partner Portuguese lawyer is registered in the portal as your representative under your power of attorney under a power of attorney.

  5. Biometrics and decisionno statutory term

Appointment at an AIMA office for biometrics — Indian passport holders enter on a short-stay Schengen visa, no residence visa is needed — and replies to requests. After approval: the EUR 8,418.90 issuance fee and a 2-year residence card.

  6. Life in the status and renewal2 + 2 years

We track the minimum stay and the fund's maturity. Renewal through AIMA's renewal portal (open to ARI since 16 February 2026). After 5 years: permanent residence.

How people actually use it

The official conditions are above. Below is how the fund route works in real life, from our cases and research.

Renewal depends on the units in your account

In our practice a golden visa renews easily when the investment that gave rise to it is preserved. For a fund that means units in your name on the renewal date and a fund that has not yet been liquidated. We match the fund's maturity to the renewal dates before you buy.

Receipts and application status are an asset

On Portugal, the research records renewals completed in about two and a half months as well as delays caused by a payment not showing in the system. We keep every DUC receipt and track the status in the portal.

Travel after the card expires

A renewal receipt does not always substitute for a document at the border — a practical point for families flying regularly between Europe, the Gulf and India. We plan flights and file within the permitted window, not in the last week.

A fund is a risk, not a deposit

Returns and the recovery of capital depend on the companies in the portfolio, not on the state. We show the scenarios — the fund closing after 6 years, a loss, an early exit — before you sign the subscription.

Andrey Boyko

Receiving the first card is only the beginning of managing the status. In our practice a golden visa renews easily and quickly — the key condition is that the qualifying asset remains in your ownership. At renewal what matters is the preserved basis, a complete document set, correct payment and a confirmed application.

We recommend preparing early and filing within the permitted window. Travel after the card expires must be checked against the current rules: a renewal receipt does not always substitute for a document at the border — a practical point for families flying regularly between Europe, the Gulf and India.

Citizenship needs its own horizon: the law of 18 May 2026 set a general term of ten years (seven for EU and Portuguese-speaking-country citizens), with transition rules for pending applications.

Who the programme is for

Who this programme suits in our practice.

Passive investors

You do not want to run a business in Portugal or buy assets: fund units managed by a licensed company are the only route where a professional, not you, looks after the investment.

Entrepreneurs with capital of EUR 500,000 or more

A European residence without relocating: 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each following 2-year period. The business, the school and the home stay in India, the UAE or wherever they are.

Families comparing a fund with a cultural contribution

EUR 250,000 in culture is not returned; EUR 500,000 in a fund comes back on the fund's terms. We cost the full status over 5 years, not just the entry threshold.

Those who care about maturity and exit

A fund maturity of 5 years or more matches the duty to hold the investment. We work through what happens if the fund closes early and how that affects renewal — and how the remittance fits within LRS.

Service packages

Our fee depends on the fund and the family composition. We send the quote in reply to your message.

Residence for the whole family: who can be included

For Garant IN the family is a core value: the Golden Visa through a fund is granted to your relatives with you or later under articles 98–99 of Lei 23/2007. Below are the 2026 conditions as described by AIMA and set by Lei 61/2025, without generic phrases.

  • Spouse or partner

A marriage or de facto union that is valid and recognised under Portuguese law; both partners must be at least 18 on the filing date (Lei 61/2025). The spouse needs no share in the fund: the investment is one. AIMA fees apply per person: EUR 842.80 for analysis and EUR 8,418.90 for issuance.

  • Children

Minor children of the couple or of one spouse, including children adopted under a decision recognised by Portugal. Adult children up to 25 if unmarried, dependent and studying. Older children only through a route of their own.

  • Dependent parents

Parents of the applicant or spouse who depend on the applicant; there is no minimum age. Dependency must be proven: remittances, shared household, no income of their own. Siblings only if minors under the applicant's guardianship by a recognised decision.

  • Family budget

The investment does not grow: EUR 500,000 in the fund covers the whole family. AIMA fees do: per person EUR 842.80 for analysis and EUR 8,418.90 for issuance, then EUR 4,210.30 per renewal. A couple pays EUR 18,523.40 in fees at issuance, a couple with two children EUR 37,046.80. Add insurance for everyone, police certificates for adults, apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs and translations of marriage and birth certificates. Remittances from India are planned within each family member's LRS limit.

The family application is filed together with the investor's, but its outcome depends on approval of the main permit. ARI holders are exempt from the 2-year residence requirement before reunification (Lei 61/2025). Garant IN's migration programme experts check each family member's documents against AIMA's 2026 requirements in advance. Verified on 6 October 2026 against the AIMA site, Lei 56/2023 and Lei 61/2025.

What we do that others will not

The EUR 500,000 threshold is the same for every fund. The difference lies in which fund you buy and whether the file passes the bank and AIMA first time.

  1. The fund is checked as an investment, not as a visa

CMVM registration of the fund and depositary, the management company and its record, the share in Portuguese companies, maturity, fees, exit terms and what happens on early liquidation. We look at what happens to the money, not only to the card.

  2. The fund's strategy is checked against the property ban

The market offers 'golden visa funds' with property inside. The law prohibits such an investment directly or indirectly — and the refusal arrives after the money has been sent. We read the prospectus and the management company's declaration before you buy.

  3. Source of funds and the transfer

The Portuguese bank will examine the origin of the money before AIMA does. We prepare the evidence in advance and plan the remittance from India within the LRS cap of USD 250,000 per person per financial year and the TCS rules, across family members, financial years or funds already held abroad.

  4. Family from day one

A file for every family member, simultaneous filing, AIMA fees for each person in the budget from the start. The investment stays one for all.

  5. The horizon: renewal, PR and citizenship

The fund's maturity, the renewal window and travel after the card expires go into one calendar. We show how the years add up to PR and what the 2026 law requires for citizenship. We do not promise a fast passport, and we say plainly that citizenship would replace the Indian one.

Wording pending approval.

What this route is and who it suits

The fund route is the main way to obtain the Portugal Golden Visa after the 2023 reform. In law it is a capital transfer of at least EUR 500,000 to buy units of a non-property collective investment undertaking (article 3 of Lei 23/2007, sub-paragraph vii, as amended by Lei 56/2023). The fund must be set up under Portuguese law, have a maturity of at least 5 years at the time of investment and place at least 60% of its investments in companies based in Portugal.

The route suits passive investors who do not want to run a business in the country or buy assets, and families based in India, the UAE or elsewhere who want a European residence without relocating: 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each following 2-year period. The capital stays your asset on the fund’s terms rather than going to the state as a cultural contribution does, and the Indian passport is untouched because this is residence, not citizenship.

It does not suit anyone expecting a guaranteed return: a fund is market risk under CMVM supervision, not a deposit. Nor anyone offered a ‘fund with apartments’: the law prohibits property investment directly or indirectly. An overview of every Golden Visa route is on the programme page.

What comes next

Renewal every 2 years

Filed through AIMA's renewal portal while the units are held, the minimum stay is met (14 days per 2 years), insurance is in force and there are no debts. The fee is EUR 4,210.30 per person.

Permanent residence after 5 years

After 5 years of temporary residence: an application for permanent residence with basic Portuguese; the card is issued for 5 years and the status itself has no expiry. The issuance fee for an ARI holder is EUR 11,786.70.

Citizenship after 10 years

The law of 18 May 2026: 10 years of legal residence (7 for EU and Portuguese-speaking-country citizens), a language and culture test, knowledge of rights and duties. Periods are added up within a 12-year window. For Indian citizens this step would mean surrendering the Indian passport.

Exit from the fund after 5 years

Once the commitment is met, the units can be sold or held to the fund's liquidation at maturity. If you already hold permanent residence by then, the status no longer depends on the investment.

Who files your application

Two levels of quality control: Garant IN's migration consulting and case management department runs a rigorous pre-application compliance screening (Pre-Due Diligence) and prepares the document package to 2026 requirements, while the application in Portugal is prepared and filed together with licensed local lawyers and authorised agents. This is how we minimise the risk of refusal at the preparation stage, before the documents reach the government authority.

Frequently asked questions

Which fund qualifies for the Golden Visa?

A collective investment undertaking set up under Portuguese law, without property, with a maturity at the time of investment of at least 5 years and at least 60% of its investments in commercial companies based in Portugal. The fund and its depositary operate under CMVM supervision. Compliance is confirmed by the management company's declaration, which AIMA checks.

Can I split EUR 500,000 across several funds?

Yes. AIMA allows units in several qualifying funds if the total is at least EUR 500,000 and the money arrived by international transfer. Each fund must meet the legal criteria on its own: a maturity of 5 years or more and 60% in Portuguese companies.

Do I get the money back?

The units are your property, and on the fund's terms the capital comes back on exit or liquidation, with a gain or a loss. The state guarantees nothing: this is an investment with market risk, not a deposit. Units can be sold before 5 years, but that puts the renewal of the permit at risk.

How do I send EUR 500,000 from India?

Outward transfers by resident Indians run through the Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme, currently USD 250,000 per person per financial year, and larger remittances attract tax collected at source above a threshold. The investment is therefore planned across family members, financial years or funds already held abroad. The Portuguese bank must confirm the money arrived by international transfer.

How long do I need to spend in Portugal?

7 days in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent 2-year period, consecutive or not. You do not have to live in the country.

What are the government fees?

Under the AIMA table in force from 1 March 2026: EUR 842.80 to receive and analyse the application, EUR 8,418.90 to issue the permit and EUR 4,210.30 per renewal — per applicant, family members included. Permanent residence for an ARI holder: EUR 11,786.70. Payment is by DUC through the portal; cash is not accepted. The fund's own fees are counted separately per its prospectus.

Does a fund with property in the portfolio qualify?

No. The law prohibits directing the investment, directly or indirectly, into real estate, and the route is expressly called 'non-property funds'. Funds with residential, commercial or hotel assets are a ground for refusal even if they are sold 'for the golden visa'.

How long does a decision take?

The AIMA site gives no deadline for ARI decisions, and the agency runs a dedicated plan to clear its backlog. In our practice and research a renewal takes about 2.5 months; a first issuance takes longer and depends on the biometrics queue. This is not a statutory term, and we will not promise 'four months'.

Does the residence permit affect my Indian citizenship?

No. ARI is residence, not citizenship: your Indian passport stays as it is. Only naturalisation — after 10 years under the 2026 law — would mean acquiring a foreign citizenship, and since India does not allow dual citizenship, the Indian passport would then have to be surrendered. That is a separate decision years away, not part of the Golden Visa.

Do I have to pay tax in Portugal?

The permit itself does not make you a tax resident. If you spend more than 183 days a year in Portugal or keep a permanent home there, residence has to be assessed separately. Income from the fund is taxed under the rules of your country of tax residence and of Portugal; preferential regimes such as IFICI are not granted to permit holders automatically. We run the tax calculation before you buy the units.

When can I get PR and citizenship?

Permanent residence after 5 years of temporary residence with basic Portuguese; the PR card is issued for 5 years and the status itself has no expiry. Citizenship under the law of 18 May 2026 after 10 years of legal residence (7 for EU and Portuguese-speaking-country citizens), with a language and culture test. The rule counting time from the date of the residence application has been repealed; applications filed before 19 May 2026 are decided under the previous rules.

What if the fund closes before 5 years?

AIMA states plainly that selling or changing the investment on which the permit is based can jeopardise renewal while the status depends on that investment. That is why we check the fund's maturity and liquidation terms before buying, and prepare a reinvestment into another qualifying fund in advance in case of an early event.

I live in India or the UAE. Which documents are needed and from where?

The application is filed online through the ARI portal, and you travel to Portugal for biometrics on a short-stay Schengen visa or another legal basis — no residence visa is needed. Police certificates are required from the country of citizenship and from every country where you lived for more than a year, no older than 3 months, translated into Portuguese and certified. Indian documents carry an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs; UAE documents are legalised through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Can I include parents or adult children in a Golden Visa application through a fund?

Yes. According to AIMA, family members are the spouse, minor children, unmarried dependent children up to 25 who are studying, and dependent parents of the applicant or spouse. They may apply with you or later; under Lei 61/2025 ARI holders do not need 2 years of residence before reunification.

How does the investment change when applying with a family?

It does not: EUR 500,000 in the fund is one investment for the whole family. Only AIMA fees change: EUR 842.80 for analysis and EUR 8,418.90 for issuance per person, EUR 4,210.30 per renewal. A couple with two children pays EUR 37,046.80 in fees at issuance. Everyone needs insurance, and adults need police certificates.

Do you offer a refund if the application is refused?

Yes. If the application is refused through the fault of our team or an error in building the case, we refund the company's service fee less a minimal retention for costs actually incurred. Refund terms, the payment schedule and the rules on retaining service costs are fixed in the contract before work begins. Before we start, we check your documents and risk history free of charge and tell you about any risks in advance.
